  • What kind of ecommerce platforms do we design?

    We do not select platforms, we design and develop for all of the ecommerce platforms that are widely used out there. If any client comes to us asking for any other platform that we haven’t worked with previously, we have very skilled people in our team that can learn different technologies inside out within a very short timeframe, and they are more than willing to learn new technologies. 

    Apart from building platform specific solutions to our clients, we also move the contents of the online store of clients from one platform to another upon their request. This usually happens with clients that have faced restrictions in any given platform that they were not able to do what they really wanted, or they had a hard time doing some action that they desired within the platform, so they decide to move on to another platform.

    So what we do is, we try to understand their reasons and problems with the previous platform, and check to see which platform will suit them better. We will investigate into the case, do some research and try it ourselves first, then give our clients a recommendation which we think is the best option for them to proceed with. 

    Then if they want to proceed with what we offered them, we proceed with pulling all the online store items and data from their previous ecommerce platform, and inject these data into the new platform, and get them up and running immediately by completing all the necessary integrations.

  • Shopify

    Shopify is a Canadian ecommerce company launched in 2006 by its founders Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake. Shopify enables people to easily launch and manage their own online stores. Shopify offers payment services, marketing services, shipping services and customer support tools such as live chat, to make life easier for small retailers. It is often regarded as one of the best ecommerce platforms out there with more than 800,000 active online stores globally.     

    Advantages of the platform:

    The platform is easy to use and all the technical hassle has been taken care of by the platform, users can pretty much do everything with a couple of clicks. The platform has a lot of well designed and built templates, but in case people want custom designs, the platform enables that via the use of a template engine; Liquid.

    The platform is flexible, and gives access to the code for any user that wants to dig deep into the platform. The platform is pretty scalable, allowing users to easily create small or large ecommerce stores.  The platform has its own app store ‘Shopify App Store’, and there are a lot of add-ons (apps) which users can benefit from. The platform has a big online developer support from independent developers. The platform does not have an open source community but the 24/7 support team is always alert and willing to help.

    Disadvantages of the platform:

    The URL structure is built in a way that it is very poor in terms of SEO. The subdirectory structure is not the best to use in this case, but there is not much that can be done to change this.

    In order to have stores with more than one language, the platform does not offer you a solution straight out of the box. You need to add apps for this, and they are kind of limited and may be costly. Shopify wants to use its own payments platform which is the Shopify Payments. If that is not used, then they charge the store a transaction fee which will be separate from the payment processing fees of Paypal or Stripe.

    Finally, having content that is not ecommerce related, and just regular content, with custom looks which is non-templatey in Shopify might be hard.

  • BigCommerce

    BigCommerce is an ecommerce company launched in 2009. BigCommerce enables people to have customer groups, segmentation, web hosting services and SEO (search engine optimization) services on their own online stores. BigCommerce has more than 100,000 active online stores globally.  

    BigCommerce states that they enable its users with all the necessary tools to have an online store. They regard their platform as being very easy and the products of the platform will end up being beautiful looking online stores with plenty of marketing tools that come as default within the platform.

    Advantages of the platform:

    BigCommerce is probably the best of all when it comes to SEO performance. The way they handle with the content and their setup enables them to be very SEO friendly. It is a pretty scalable platform which allows the stores to take the whole journey from small to large stores, where the platform will grow with every individual store. 

    They do not have any transaction fees which makes it a great option for some people. The platform doesn’t limit the amount of variants, and it is easy to add more and more.

    Disadvantages of the platform:

    The platform gives you annual sales threshold which means that if a store makes more sales than the specified limit, that store will be upgraded to one higher and more expensive plan, this will increase costs for the store owners. The platform also does not run any free plans, so everyone pays in order to use the platform, even in its basic plans.

    Having regular content pages which should be the easiest thing on such a platform is actually very limited and restricted. It is not easy. The stores come with one default language and having more than one language requires developers to code specifically on that case.

  • WooCommerce

    WooCommerce is an ecommerce plugin built specifically for the WordPress platform and it turns any WordPress website into a powerful online store. It is an open source platform which targets online retailers of any size which use the WordPress platform. WooCommerce launched in 2011. 

    WooCommerce enables people to be easily set up on their WordPress site, and this made them very popular among people. WooCommerce has more than 380,000 active online stores globally and the fact that they are open source and free for individual and commercial use makes them very attractive to people. Once installed, you can use it right away and this is very convenient.

     

    Advantages of the platform:

    The platform has a lot of users, due to it WordPress origin, and this makes it very easy to find extensions or plugins that can immediately add any feature on online stores. The platform enables customer and store admin accounts. Design wise, there are a lot of themes used in the platform, some are paid some are free, but all of them are extendable, which might require some coding to be involved as well.

    Disadvantages of the platform:

    One major disadvantage of the WooCommerce platform is that the initial setup can be a bit tricky for a first timer. And the platform does not have a unique support center which deals with issues. Rather, there are a lot of different support groups related to different themes and plugins, and this can get frustrating and even more expensive at times. Although the platform is free, these costs can add up in the long run.

  • Magento

    Magento is an open source ecommerce platform launched in 2008. Magento has more than 100,000 active online stores globally and the fact that they are open source and perfectly expandable makes it very popular among people. It has a lot of free and paid individual modules/components that can help improve any online store. 

    Advantages of the platform:

    The platform has a lot of extensions and plugins thanks to its open source nature, with an active developer community. These platform is flexible, which can be easily integrated with other third party systems. It is API friendly. Also, if any store grows a lot, the platform allows you to upgrade to their enterprise option which has more support from Magento’s own developers and includes much more helpful features.

    Disadvantages of the platform:

    The flexibility of the platform comes with a very high cost, especially for those small stores. These costs are the cost of maintenance (maintaining the general code and extra plugins). Also, the changes done as the store is expanding are also charged. On top of this, even very small additions to the code, or the addition of a plugin will require a developer involvement.

    Finding an agency to design and develop your ecommerce store can be challenging thesedays, since there are a lot of people claiming that they are digital agencies. First of all, it would be wise to go and check the websites and the portfolios of every agency that might be an alternative. Try to see what kind of projects they built, their clients, the quality of the work they produce. Then decide on your budget that you will be spending for your ecommerce website, and try to understand if the agency works within your budget. 

    If that is the case, then it is time to improve the research and dive into reading some reviews about the agency, how do people react to the company, are they popular or not.  

    Then look into finding some information on the projects & work that the company has delivered previously. Look to find the results of the work they produced, how it impacted the clients. 

    The agency’s approach is also important. How do they run the whole process, will they keep you in the grind all the time or will they take all they want from you in the beginning and come back to you with the end product? These need to be checked.

    Finally, look if the agency is an award winner. If thats the case, then even better. This shows that they know what they are doing and people like their work as well.
